The right tool makes a world of difference…
Okay, so I’ve been wearing glasses now for a few years. First, just to read. Then gradually, before I realized what had happened, I was looking for my glasses almost constantly. Yes, it was time for an almost-full-time pair. I chose blue frames for fun and didn’t really mind wearing them. Then my husband suggested contacts - less cumbersome, relatively inexpensive (especially with a Costco rebate
) and actually nearly invisible. Bingo! Loved ‘em. But then, I began to notice I couldn’t read smaller print well anymore…unless I put on a pair of ‘reading glasses’ on top of already wearing my contacts. The optometrist I had visited, explained this was normal and I accepted it as my new lifestyle. This was especially aggravating when I was sharing at a public function, trying to manage reading glasses intermittently while speaking (no glasses needed) to reading aloud off paper or a book (had to quickly throw on my reading glasses). Unsightly really-oops another pun. I had begun printing in at least a 14-font so I could see my notes throughout most of my presentations without grabbing for my reading glasses! (Nothing less than a 12-font for the naked eye after about age 40!)
OK, so lately I sensed, due to more aggravation, that I was needing to ‘up’ the number on my reading glasses. (All you young ones out there aren’t really getting this, because you don’t really relate to the reading glass display at the drugstore, relegating it to old people who “ACTUALLY BUY A PAIR OF UGLY GLASSES OFF A SHELF WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION??!?!?!?! Go figure. I wouldn’t be caught dead…”) That’s what I always thought, too, until I was the one digging through the piles for something, anything, that didn’t look like something Betty Crocker would wear! So instead of +125, I bought a package of 3 ‘Fashion Lifestyle’ - ha! - in +200. Then I went to the other optometrist yesterday for a fresh eye check. I HAD TO KNOW what was happening with my eyes.
A few short moments into our exam, she looked up at me and asked, “ever consider mono vision? It’s when you wear a near-sighted contact in your left eye and a far-sighted contact in your right eye. Your eyes naturally adjust to them and you don’t need reading glasses anymore.” SAY NO MORE! I’m sold. Where do I sign?! She couldn’t believe an optometrist had never offered the idea to me before. I tried the ‘practice pair’ and haven’t stopped smiling since. I haven’t had the urge to go looking for my reading glasses for the last 24 hours - what relief. Like I’ve said before: The right tool makes ALL the difference!

I’ve never heard of those contacts! I wonder if my mom has heard of them. I will ask her. Technology is amazing, I often wonder what did they do 100 years ago for common changes in our bodies as we age? Or anything for that matter!

I’m turning 35 next month, and I’m just starting to hold my books at arms length to read them. I’ve been putting off getting to the eye doctor, but I guess it’s time. Speaking of time, I woke up very (very) early this morning having just had a dream of Denise making me a country ham sandwich with her very own fresh-baked bread from her deli……..very weird….. So I figured that God woke me up to pray for you, Denise, so I did. Very strange…..by the way, if you are ever back in Toronto, I’d really like to try that sandwich! God Bless.
